Monday Road Report
Beautiful day Monday, until about 5:30 when the wind and rain moved in,
but neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor hail stops a cutthroat. So I
arrived a Brewvies at 6:00 after hearing from some brave souls that the darkening
skies were intimidating them (one referred to himself as a sort of
flower). When I didn’t see any bicycles in the parking lot I figured I
would go inside, handle a pint, then send out a note calling everyone
wimps for not showing up. Except that I found that Steve Wassmund, Ryan
McCalmon and John Moreton were waiting for me, ready to roll. Being all guys,
nobody pointed out the dark clouds. Nobody acted cold. And NOBODY suggested
that we bag it. So we rolled south.
Then the equipment failures started. First it was the pointy piece of
glass in Steve’s tire. One down three to go. Darker clouds to the south and
much water on the road. John’s light malfunctioned. More water on the road.
Rain in the air. The water off of Ryan’s back tire was covering me with a
rooster tail of water, and he has a fender on his bike. And it got
darker. And colder. And we lost John (light malfunction), but we rode on and it
got darker, and wetter. As Ryan and I paused to decide whether to continue, I
happened to notice that I couldn’t feel my feet. Those vents make my
shoes light and cool in the summer, but no kidding. I couldn’t feel my feet.
So it was equipment failure again. Otherwise I would have gone on. Really.
So we rode home. Ryan said he was willing to keep riding, and I believe
him. But I went home, had a pint, a HOT shower, and then had another
pint. I can feel my feet now.
Let’s do it again next week.
